Does the phrase,

“Johnny has two apples…” sound familiar?

You’re at the dining room table, night after night, trying to figure out what’s not clicking. You witness your child getting more and more work with less assistance, and you do your best to advocate with no luck. You know that more assignments don’t equal more comprehension, and wish there was something you could do to take her education to the next level. It’s no way to live or learn.

The right way doesn’t exist because every student is different.

As each cohort crosses the digital threshold, I ensure students feel safe to learn, make mistakes and express emotions. This way, they won’t feel embarrassed or silly for the questions they’ve been too afraid to ask! Nothing feels better than to see your child’s eyes light up when they finally understand a concept. It’s like they discover a brand new world.

A six-week dive into the importance of a 360° life as a student, that takes girls from cluttered to in control of their education. Everything from mental health and wellness, to relationships with friends and teachers. It all impacts learning. I connect the dots to understand yourself as a student, in order to gain an understanding of math. We apply real-life situations, scenario-building and relatability into every thread, to ensure the program leaves a lasting impact, and doesn’t stop at completion of the program.

This is the perfect programs for Black girls who:

  • Are in middle school or high school girls aged 12-17.
  • Have experienced a dip in grades, confidence or understanding in the subject of mathematics.
  • Have a strong interest in the subject of math, and want a chance to be challenged outside of the classroom.
  • Works well in a small, community-centered environment and can benefit from learning alongside a group of girls.
  • Has an interest in science, technology, engineering and math and may want to pursue a career in the STEM industries.
  • Wants to not only memorize academic material, but truly understand it to apply realistically.

“Dr. Steele was excellent. I don’t like online classes, but she was so involved with the class and her students. She made the online class feel like a classroom environment. She was extremely enthusiastic, I was able to detect her love for the subject through her teaching skills. She was very encouraging and delivered lots of verbal praises.

She ensured our grades were posted in a timely manner. I can go on about her. Nothing needs to be changed about the class. Thank you Dr. Steele for being a GREAT professor.”

Here’s the thing: It’s so much more than math.

We cover six modules to ensure that our work makes an impact beyond the classroom.

Module 1: Mindset

Nothing can happen in life if your mind isn’t on board. That’s one of the first things we tackle, so that our students are empowered inside and out to take control of their own learning.

Module 2: Influences

As a child, things like peer pressure and trends have a huge impact on decision-making. We’ll cover how to know the difference between a positive and negative influence, as well as how to know how they show up in our lives.

Module 3: Health

Mental, physical and emotional wellness are so important as students develop and begin to grow into adulthood. I don’t ignore how my girls are feeling and want that to be a part of their journey.

Module 4: Financial Literacy

Around the time of students starting my program, they usually begin their first jobs or start allowances. I teach the basics of savings, banks and smart spending to get them on the right foot with their money.

Module 5: Relationships

Whether romantic, platonic or professional, healthy connections are super important when attempting to grow in your career and personal life. I cover effective communication and maintaining expectations to form life-lasting connections.

Module 6: Authenticity

In everything, you must be true to yourself. We develop young women into who they truly are, so they can continue to be successful young women without sacrificing their grace, class and beauty.

Here’s how we’ll do it

To aid in your success, we’ll work through the process using:

Videos and workbooks that help our young women write out their master plans, and learn the content in various ways, accommodating all learning styles.

Live Weekly discussions to keep communication open and give the girls a chance to connect, bounce questions off each other. They can share their challenges, questions and wins.

Social skills activities to produce confidence in social settings, overcome anxieties and incorporate fun into meeting new people and reconnecting with old friends.

STEM activities so the girls can get comfortable with science and math related subjects, without the overwhelm of a traditional classroom setting.

Journal prompts to encourage introspection and self-love. The more conversations they have with themselves, the better they’ll understand the “why” behind their desires and drive.

Projects filled with fun to increase creativity and responsibility. Don’t worry, they won’t be super lengthy, because I know school work and home responsibilities come first!

I’m completely in…after I get these questions answered…….

No problem! You deserve to gain all the information you need to make the best decision for your family. Let’s cover those burning questions.

Parents and Guardians

WHAT IF I CAN’T AFFORD THE PROGRAM?

I don’t pocket watch, by any means, but I have added the option to split the investment into smaller installments. Your child’s education should be a priority, but not a financial burden. Every cohort is 6 weeks long, so feel free to apply whenever you feel ready. I Can’t wait to have you!

I’VE TRIED OTHER ONLINE COURSES BEFORE. HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT?

As an educator that has experience on and offline, I have come to know what kinds of processes, teaching styles, and communication kids are most responsive to. The problem with other programs is that they aren’t tailored to YOUR child. I make the extra leap to connect with your child’s needs, concerns, and strengths!

WON’T THIS ADD MORE TO MY CHILD’S WORKLOAD?

Not at all. This program is designed to be an outlet outside of your child’s workload, not to increase it. A lot of our work is dedicated to teaching time management and prioritization to make her current workload even more manageable.

IS THERE A DEADLINE TO APPLY?

All applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Each cohort is six weeks long, giving us the time to get acquainted and gain connections that last beyond the allotted time frame. If you complete an application, you will be notified about cohort start dates.

HOW MANY GIRLS ARE IN EACH COHORT?

There is a maximum of 10 girls per cohort to ensure the experience is intimate and avoids overwhelm.

I HAVE MULTIPLE KIDS INTERESTED IN STEM. CAN I ENROLL MULTIPLE CHILDREN?

Of course. Depending on their age and classification, they may be placed in separate cohorts, but as long as there is room, I’d be happy to welcome them in. The more the merrier!

MY DAUGHTER DOESN’T NEED EXTRA HELP. SHE’S JUST GOING THROUGH A ROUGH PATCH.

I’m so glad that you have complete faith in your child. I do too! The thing is, sometimes it isn’t the content that raises an issue in our intelligence, but rather the style, environment or even changes in how we learn. So, both can be true. This could definitely be a rough patch, and your child could benefit from additional enrichment outside of her school setting. Feel free to reach out to me at drbjsteele@gmail.com with any questions.

IS YOUR PROGRAM LGBTQIA+ FRIENDLY?

Of course. Everyone deserves a loving and accepting community, no matter what has led them to this point. As long as your child identifies as a girl or young lady, she is welcome. My girls and I work hard to ensure that everyone is loved, no matter what.

I’M NOT COMFORTABLE WITH MY CHILD ATTENDING IN-PERSON. IS THE PROGRAM VIRTUAL?

Yes. The content and meetings are completely online. We want to continue to ensure everyone’s safety!

CAN MY DAUGHTER PARTICIPATE IF SHE’S INVOLVED IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AT SCHOOL?

Yes. Most of our meeting times will be in the evening, after school activities have ended. If students have an activity or family obligation that comes up, all calls will be recorded for easy access on their own time.

HOW DO I KNOW MY CHILD IS THE RIGHT FIT FOR THE PROGRAM?

If your daughter is a young lady aged 12-17 and wants to dig deeper into STEM, she is a great fit. Whether she is looking to face challenges or gain them to flex her academic muscles, you should complete an application to give her the opportunity!

Questions from Tweens, Teens and Everything in Between

WILL THE OTHER GIRLS BE MY AGE?

Although 13 year-old and 17 year-old are close in age, the cohorts are split between middle school and high school girls. Your application will specify your grade so we can place you accordingly to ensure you’re comfortable.

I WANT TO PARTICIPATE, BUT HOW DO I BRING THIS UP TO MY GUARDIANS?

It depends on what your parental figures are. You know them better than I do. If you think they are worried about costs, time or effectiveness, I’d address it head on. You could even detail our modules listed above, and make a case for how the entire family could improve if these topics were covered as you grow into womanhood.

WILL THE OTHER GIRLS AND I HAVE A CHANCE TO CONNECT BY OURSELVES?

Definitely. I can’t require you to spend time outside of our planned meetings, but if you’d like extra time planned to simply have fun and talk, feel free! I can add something on the books, or you can form a group chat and put it on your calendars!

WHAT IF A FRIEND MAKES FUN OF ME FOR GETTING EXTRA HELP?

I’m sorry to break it to you, but anyone that does that is not your friend, at all. The people that surround you should always encourage you to be honest with yourself and do what’s best for you. Besides, you’ll gain a whole new group of friends while in the program!

WHAT IF I DON’T LEARN ANYTHING?

I know this might not mean much to you right now, but I have three degrees that guarantee you will walk away with something new in your brain! When the program starts, I’ll also be sure to ask what some of your goals are. I’ll track your progress throughout, so we can determine how far you’ve come when the program ends. You’ll learn so much, I promise!

“Seeing the different ways to solve problems will help me with my students and my daughter.”

“Understanding that part of the reason kids find it so difficult is because sometimes the process is unclear. Having different ways to solve math problems is helpful!”
